ABOUT

I can’t really say much.

My childhood was relatively normal (no child thinks their childhood is normal, but looking back it clearly was), I managed to be average in everything education-related I did through high school, and then I went to college.

College was a game-changer for me. It was exactly what I needed to be interested in education and learning again.

The focus for me in college was writing. I realize my output is bad. If you’ve ever read any of my published work, then:

  • you’ve either read a very small U2 fanzine called U2 and Then Some;
  • you’ve been given (or were the one person who bought) my poetry chapbook Vatic Zygite (don’t ask where the name came from – I was writing poetry, after all, and thought I was pushing the boundaries of language or some such crap);
  • you read the single short story I published in Wayne State University’s student newspaper, or you’re a member of ACM’s Special Interest Group on University and College Computing Services and you’ve read one (or more) of the three papers I’ve written (or had a hand in writing).

However, no matter what I do now, I still come back to writing. It’s more satisfying than anything else out there. Sure, you can run a help desk (like I do), or repair computers (like I’ve done), or perform various other tasks that occupy your time. But, for me, I’m looking for something that feels like I’m being productive and contributing something. Writing really is that outlet for me. I only just realized that in the past few years, but I hope to find more time to manage to actually write, publish, and make a true career change.

“Time” is the operative word, of course. Liza, my lovely wife of eight years, and I are expecting our first child this summer, she’s working on her doctorate, we’re both working full-time, and so on.

So, even if I just keep dreaming about writing, I think I’ll have plenty to occupy my time and contribute to.
